Account Manager responsibilities for existing-client growth.
If the role is expected to retain and grow existing clients, the job description needs more than relationship management. It needs to define how the account manager understands the client, plans the account and identifies where a new need may exist.
What the role is usually expected to own.
Relationship and retention
Maintain senior relationships, understand client objectives, manage risk and support renewals.
Account planning
Maintain a current view of the account, priorities, stakeholders, current footprint and likely areas of change.
Expansion
Identify needs worth exploring, create qualified expansion pipeline and coordinate the right internal capability when a need is confirmed.
Responsibility for growth creates a research requirement.
An account manager cannot identify meaningful expansion only from relationship history or product usage. The role also needs a current view of what is happening in the client's business and how that may affect the relationship.
That information can be produced by the account manager, RevOps, an account planning analyst or an external intelligence layer.
What an account manager needs to make the responsibility executable.
Current footprint
What the client buys, what has been implemented and where the supplier is already involved.
Client business context
Business model, operating changes, strategic moves and external evidence that may affect needs.
Questions to test
Specific hypotheses the account manager can validate with the client instead of opening with a generic upsell conversation.
Decide who supplies the intelligence.
If the account manager is expected to research every account personally, make that capacity explicit. If the portfolio is too large, separate the analytical work from relationship ownership.
